In September, Brandi Stilke was sentenced to a one- to 15-year prison term for the Feb. 23, 2011, car crash that killed her daughter, 3-year-old Aubree Jo Anderson from blunt force trauma to the head. Stilke was hospitalized briefly with a dislocated hip and cracked pelvis.. The father, Jared, of Plain City, and his family had fought against shared custody of Aubree Jo but lost in court. Jared since campaigned hard for the law that passed the Utah Legislature this year to remove gender as a consideration in custody decisions.

At about the same time, in mid-2010, that the custody fight began in 2nd District Court here over Aubree Jo, Stilke began another custody contest in the same court for her daughter, now 9, by another father a proceeding that is on hold while she is in prison.

But Stilke, 28, still wants to fight for full physical custody of her older daughter, her attorney said.

“I’ve advised her that she has about the same chance I have of obtaining flight by flapping my arms in the air,” said child custody attorney Roy Cole. “But she still wants to pursue it.”
